Construction and Transformation of the Digital Infrastructure in Schools in the Federal Republic of Germany (Working Title)
Today, the introduction of digital technologies in schools is often understood as technical progress – but its course was characterised by regional and social differences, unequal resources, diverging interests and the question of what society had to gain from computerised schools in the first place. This doctoral project examines the transformation of school digital infrastructure from the first school computers in the 1960s to Internet integration in the 1990s and 2000s using the examples of Bavaria, with its early industrial change, and North Rhine-Westphalia, which is undergoing structural change. It adopts a modern perspective on the history of technology and examines the interactions between computer technology development, social dissemination and utilisation as well as school practice. Due to the self-administration of schools and the synergies between the actors involved, the focus is on both teaching and internal administrative practices.
The project therefore focusses on the actors and practices of teachers in the classroom and school administration as well as on changing spaces of use of computer technology and ideas of and practices with networked school computers. In doing so, political control attempts as well as bottom-up processes, social, educational policy and economic actor constellations, regional differences and the question of inequalities are raised.
